Avoiding a Divorce
Because of the addition of No-Fault Divorce in Illinois, it takes 2 to stay married but only 1 to get divorced. If you are reading this page you have already taken the first steps (or perhaps your spouse has). Before you go any further, STOP.
Before you commit yourself to a divorce, make sure it is really what you need, not what you simply want today. The divorce process is a life changing event–for you, your spouse, your extended families and most importantly, the children. Obviously, if your spouse is abusive, is having an affair, or neglectful of the children you don’t need to hesitate–you need to call a divorce attorney and then a therapist.
If you are just unhappy or the grass looks greener somewhere else I cannot encourage you enough to STOP. Think about your Options and then Proceed. Ask yourself these questions:
- What happened between the wedding day and the present day?
- What are the problems we’re having?
- Can our situation be improved with counseling?
- Are the problems a result of economic hardships, not a broken relationship?
- Have we tried everything we can to save this marriage?
If you determine the marriage is truly irretrievably broken, I hope you take the time to read the rest of my site and learn some of your legal rights. If you need more information or would like to schedule a consultation, please call me at 630.409.8184, or E-mail me mmw@divorcelawyerdupage.com.
